ChatGPT Images 2.6 vs Motionframe for product GIFs

Both can end in a moving picture. They do not start from the same job. Images 2.6 is OpenAI’s general image system, announced November 4, 2026, with GIF output in ChatGPT and in the API. Motionframe takes one product photo and returns a short MP4 and a GIF for a shop listing.

What each one is for

OpenAI describes GIFs for mascots, reactions, memes, storyboards, and product shots. The API path documented today generates that GIF from a prompt. The edit endpoint does not return a GIF. Motionframe’s input is the file you upload. The motion presets are rotate, zoom, gloss, float, orbit, and reveal. You also get the MP4, which Shopify and Etsy actually accept as video. A GIF alone does not fill those video slots.

The product in the photo

A generated GIF can redraw the object. Packaging text is where that shows up first. Motionframe is built to move the photo you uploaded, and the prompts ask the motion to leave the product itself alone. That is a design goal, not a promise that every frame will be perfect. Put the result next to the original and do not publish a clip that changes the label, the color, or the shape.

OpenAI says Images 2.6 is meant to keep characters, products, and brand details more consistent across edits, and the launch notes describe saved reference images in ChatGPT for people, pets, and characters. That is useful when you are inventing a campaign character. It is a different problem from “this jar, this label, this photo.”

Sizes and files

  • Motionframe lets you pick 1:1, 4:5, or 9:16 and a length of 3 or 5 seconds. Crop the still to that shape before you upload if the slot has to match exactly.
  • You download an MP4 and a GIF of the same animation.
  • A seller plan can run up to 10 photos on one preset. The monthly plan is not on sale while payments are packs only.
  • Images 2.6 API GIFs use a frame count and a frame duration, and the guide says size can be automatic or a width and height in multiples of 16. OpenAI has not published a marketplace preset for Amazon, Shopify, or Etsy.

Which to open

Open ChatGPT when you are exploring a new visual, a mascot, or a storyboard and you are willing to art-direct the result. Open Motionframe when the listing photo already exists and you need a short loop plus a video file you can upload. Many shops will use both: one for campaigns, one for the catalog.

Questions

Does Motionframe replace ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT Images 2.6 is a general image product. Motionframe only makes a short product animation from a photo you upload.

Does Images 2.6 give me an MP4?

The API guide describes GIF output from image generation. It does not, on the pages we cite, say that the same request returns a listing MP4. Motionframe returns both.

Will either tool keep my label perfect?

Do not assume that. Preview both results against the original photo. If the printed text moved, do not put that file on the listing.

Can I batch a whole catalog in ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s announcement does not describe a shop catalog batch. Motionframe’s seller plan queues up to 10 photos on one motion. That plan is separate from the credit packs.
